A Juvenile Mute Swan takes flight on a frosty January morning. This was a sequence of shots which had the wings at various stages, to me this shot with the wings curved down works best. The higher speed of the D1h is a real asset for this type of photograph. Camera : Nikon D1h Lens : 300 mm f2.8 AFS Setting : 300mm x2 (TC20E) = 600mm Exposure : 1/500th f5.6 : ISO5008 |

With a group of gulls on an open lake you can get a mass flight/swarm reaction to sudden noises. The super-telephoto lens brings the group all onto one flat image and isolated from the background. Camera : Nikon D1h Lens : 600 mm f4 AFS Setting : 600mm Exposure : 1/1600th f4 : ISO1000 |

When waiting quietly for any wildlife always take a look over your shoulder, this Robin joined me on a bush behind so I swung the camera round to get this single frame before he took flight. Camera : Nikon D1h Lens : 300 mm f2.8 AFS Setting : 300mm x2 (TC20E) = 600mm Exposure : 1/90th f5.6 : ISO1000 |

Look me in the eye, Mute swans are known for their aggressivenes and this Juvenile already has the look. The use of the Super-telephoto has brought us close and thrown any background out of focus. Camera : Nikon D1h Lens : 600 mm f4 AFS Setting : 600mm Exposure : 1/1000th f8 : ISO200 |

Another equally eye capturing image, the red eye of a Black Swan setoff against the pure black feathers of the bird. Here the D1h's matrix metering has done an exelent job of caputing the pure black without any form of compensation. Camera : Nikon D1h Lens : 600 mm f4 AFS Setting : 600mm Exposure : 1/3200th f4 : ISO1000 |

Along with the Mallard the Mute Swan is a symbol of many parks and ponds and are a glorious pure white when developed into a mature adult as this one. Here the D1h has shown it's ability to render pure whites with straight matrix metering. Camera : Nikon D1h Lens : 600 mm f4 AFS Setting : 600mm Exposure : 1/1000th f4 : ISO200 |

Often found during the winter months grouped with the Canada Geese. Camera : Nikon D1h Lens : 600 mm f4 AFS Setting : 600mm x2 (TC20E) = 1,200mm Exposure : 1/125th f8 |

Maybe the easiest goose to find and photograph, often at parks and reservoirs, still a fine bird in its own right. Camera : Nikon D1h Lens : 300 mm f2.8 AFS Setting : 300mm x2 (TC20E) = 600mm Exposure : 1/125th f8 |

A common winter visitor to most local reservoirs in Derbyshire/Leicestershire, I'm still looking to get a good flight picture of this bird. Camera : Nikon D1h Lens : 300 mm f2.8 AFS Setting : 300mm x2 (TC20E) = 600mm Exposure : 1/125th f8 |

I first saw a Shelduck arround Morecambe bay and have always been taken by their colourings. Camera : Nikon D1h Lens : 300 mm f2.8 AFS Setting : 300mm x2 (TC20E) = 600mm Exposure : 1/125th f8 |

Taken from a public hide at Rutland water this photograph shows the difference in markings between male and females, this kind of picture is always more preferable then a seperate shot of each. Camera : Nikon D1h Lens : 300 mm f2.8 AFS Setting : 300mm x2 (TC20E) = 600mm Exposure : 1/125th f8 |

Only the third ever occurance in Leicestershire for this bird I was lucky it stayed around long enough for me to get this shot, although I had to use more 'lens' than I would normally like. Camera : Nikon D1h Lens : 600 mm f4 AFS Setting : 600mm x2 (TC20E) = 1,200mm Exposure : 1/125th f8 |
